This is a link post PLAY.COM shutting down! (direct retail trade only)
Government loopholes on delivery from overseas have been closed so Play will only be a marketplace for other traders from now on.
I imagine a few other cheap online retailers will disappear shortly.

This is a normal post I used to live round there
and had to walk past transformations to get to the better of the two local the chinese takeaways.

google street view seems to suggest the transformations shopfront isn't there any more, and has been replaced by a net curtain shop.

So don't worry, I haven't been stalking you when you're out shopping.

I'm sure they were using this loophole too.

This is a normal post Amazon have warehouses in the UK
I'm guessing Play never got big enough to demand the tax breaks to set up on shore like Amazon did

This is a normal post There are a load of online retailers...
small and large that were using this loophole to retain a profit while undercutting the highstreet. The result is that most small retailers on the highstreet are now out of business and all we are going to be left with is Amazon, Ebay and Supermarkets. Best get a job in Tesco while there are vacancies.

This is a normal post Oh no
I really don't want a return to the days when CD's and DVD's cost fifteen quid each because the music industry were stitching us up

This is a normal post They're still stiching you up
It's just the retailers stopped paying taxes and employing shop workers.

This is a normal post I used to use Play lots
for games - but every title I ever pre-ordered would arrive a week or so late, so I stopped. True story.

This is a normal post Yup, this was my experience too.
Used them for a lot of stuff, but they mucked up a couple of highly-anticipated preorders, so I went elsewhere.

Not really a loss, I don't think they've been consistently cheaper than anywhere else, plus their returns were quite expensive because you had to ship it overseas for a refund.
