It's a casio exilim fh20; there's various options in the 'exilim high speed' range but I think this offers the best frame rate / resolution tradeoff unless you can afford the 'F1' model. One day...

This is a normal post ooo, I got the F1 a couple of years back
the higher frame rates are a bit pants to be honest, you need masses of light to get anything half way decent,
still you have inspired me to give messing about with high speed another go (providing I can think of something to film that is)

It's already an issue at 210fps; all the other stations were impossibly dark; a bright sunny day comes out overcast; and for indoor work I tend to use a 500W work lamp. I'd assumed that the F1 would have better optics to cope with the 300fps, ah well. I figure 200ish is already fast enough, and would rather the resolution was higher. Next generation, perhaps; a few years down the line burst mode photography might be sustainable for long enough to do this with stills rather than as video.

I bought the F1 when it was released and I still use it. It is awesome at HS filming but as the previous post said it needs masses of light. Using it in daylight usually gives fantastic results, but anything indoors will need special lighting that is not using AC voltage. Anything connected to the mains will cause flicker in the film so I usually use floodlights connected to a 12 volt battery.

More recently.... LED flashlights are getting very powerfull and I found they are sufficient to illuminate @ 300 and 600 fps if the objects are not too far away. Try using one of these on the train. The results will amaze you.

Had to think about it, but I guess you took a high frame rate video from a train whilst zooming through a station?

Exactly so: the other tricks are making sure you're at the front of the train (good excuse for going first class London-bound), and that's it's a slam door so you can open the window rather than trying to film through glass and risking the autofocus screwing up.

What sort of camera do you need do do this?

I used a casio exilim FH20: that'll record 210fps at 480*360, creating a 30fps file which is 1/7th real time. The newer models do 240fps at similar resolution, and you could probably get away with converting that to 24fps for a 1/10th realtime. In the 'pricey, but still consumer' market there's the exilim F1 which captures 300fps at 512*384 (casio, if you're reading this, feel free to send me one!). All these models claim things like 1000fps recording, but it tends to be the size of a postage stamp.

For HD you're looking at ultra-expensive cameras for sports broadcasters, whilst truly insane frame rates tend to be found in industrial quality control / scientific cameras that aren't exactly designed for making youtube clips.

Basically: frame rate, resolution, cheap- pick any two.

Yeah, the resolution is only 480*360 (or something like that), but it still looks good on small screens! Youtube mangles the video a bit so it's not as smooth as it could be.

Well, the train itself travels smoothly, the camera was wedged into position in the window frame to minimise shake by myself, and what's left gets smoothed out by virtue of playback being at 1/7th capture speed.

I've found a tripod is pretty much essential for other projects, though.

I tried each station on the line, but Bath came out best: lots of light, which is key. Glad it did, because it was my home for four years, too. Always happy to see the place!

except when I go out on a Sunday, turn up for the last train only to find it's been cancelled and they're laying on taxis; then I don't have to walk home from the station.

Pointless, action-free and totally mesmerising. Mind you, I was hoping that a pretty lady might show the train her lovely boobies, but here's to the next time.

And it's pronounced bath, not baaath.

This is a normal post Putting the Zing in A Ma Zing.
Couple of things struck me here: firstly the obvious about a hundred stories contained in one flash past; secondly that the nerd in me wanted to see Tom Baker in full Dr garb moving at standard speed in the middle of it and thirdly it's bloody marvellous.

Ok, that's a few, not a couple, but it deserved the extra.

Ah, dropping a timelord in there would be excellent. It's also been suggested that I arrange to have jugglers or backflipping free-runners or devastatingly attractive women randomly scattered along the platform, but I like the way this one is simply a moving snapshot of everyday life. As others have commented, nothing happens and it should be completely dull, but somehow you watch to the end anyway.
(, Sat 20 Nov 2010, 11:03, , Reply)
This is a normal post You can make this 3D
In your video software, make a duplicate of the video, but delay it but a fraction of a second. Remove all colour but Cyan from one copy . Remove all colour but Red from the other. Blend the two copies. Because the camera is moving at a constant speed, you get the equivalent of two cameras next to each other. Wear red/cyan glasses and it should work. I have done this with footage from a train before :)

This is a normal post you don't even need to do any processing like that to get a 3d effect
basically because this is lateral motion you can use the "pulfrich effect". all you need is to watch this footage with a dark filter over one eye, and it'll look 3d.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulfrich_effect

pretty cool huh...
