Soldier photos before/during/after duty
Got to be honest, they all look pretty much the same in their before/after photos. Don't know what the article is banging on about.
Anyone agree? Or is my facial sympathy just rubbish?

They're squinting a bit in the middle ones,
because there's more sun in sand land.
That's the only notable thing I could discern.

Hmmmm
Some of the last photos definitely aren't far away from the thousand yard stare...

Fucking hell.
They all appear to go 1.'I'm a bit nervous' 2. 'I'm doing this thing' 3. 'If I died right now I wouldn't care'.

Really? I'm not seeing that at all.
All I see is 1) Podgy, 2) Dusty, and 3) Tanned (barring the first guy, obviously...). I think people may be reading too much into these pictures.

Yep
Working hard in the heat + rations + faster turnover of fluids = less body fat and a slightly gaunt appearance.
That said, being in a warzone does change you mentally, but not in a way that a camera would show. (Unless you're one of the poor bastards who finds an IED the hard way.)

All of the middle ones look a bit rough, but the ones after look pretty much the same as before duty.
Maybe a little more tanned, but I guess that comes with fighting in a fucking desert.

I can't see any significance either
beyond "people who have photos taken at significant time intervals, in different places, and with different cameras may look slightly different".
