The US is just confirming the vulnerability which was actually found by a security researcher from Belgium
Microsoft has already fixed it apparently but Apple and Google are still working on it.

The problem is that only fixes half the issue
Patching your laptop or your phone (good luck if that's an Android) only solves one side of the connection. You also need to ensure the device you're connecting TO is secured. Be that your homehub, wireless router, or similar device. When's the last time you updated the firmware on your wireless router? Do you know how? Do your parents know how to update theirs?
Many devices are in use out there that patches will never be available for because the manufacturers either don't support them anymore or just plain don't exist anymore.
