This is a normal post Coin Running On Treadmill
or CROT, as it's known to the growing army of socialist devotees...

The metaphors in the piece are not the most subtle. The eponymous 'Coin', a clear symbol of degenerate capitalist ideals, is, as is the wont in our times the centre of attention throughout the entire drama.

The audience is told, immediately and repeatedly, that the Coin is hard-working, that the Coin never stops, that the Coin, quite literally, is working (out) for you.
This is a cunning play on mammon-fetishistic society of the highest calibre. The idiocy of wealth for wealth's sake is exposed brilliantly as mere trappings around the ongoing need to attain higher levels in the currency ratings.

To come back to the title, the primum mobile is doing one thing, and one thing only - Running.
This is the lust for lucre running out of control, never stopping, ever ever onwards. Praise must be given for the brief appearances of "Acne-Ridden Youth" - from the sidelines, youth is destined to watch, never quite participate in this race of the rich, as the race goes onwards and onwards. The race is controlled only by an entity, unseen by our Youth-hero, with seemingly unlimited power and a similar amount of drive and determination.

After what is, for the Coin, merely a few brief brushes with the closeness of Youth, there is nothing left but the relentless onwards grasp for more.

Tension builds thematically - bit parts of balls and other (presumably lesser) currencies are introduced, but quickly fall by the wayside - signifying the crackpot, half-hearted and doomed attempts at European monetary union and other established, but failing sovereign coins (with a lower-case c). None but Coin survive, proud and majestic in its Alpha domination of the one remaining market.

From the sidelines, we hear the chants - is it Youth? is it Cynicism? is it the booming voice of the Masters of Coin? - shouting out the distance. How far has Coin come in its epic journey? How far has it conquered all before it? The chants tease us - are we grateful that Coin has been with us all this way? Are we resentful that Coin has taken us this far?

The ground on which Coin continuosly turns, itself turns underneath. This is the world, turning ever onward, the one thing upholding and at the same time powering Coin on its never-ending quest to Be. And in its turn, Coin is oblivious of the ground that gives it being, it is oblivious to the downtrodden miles, to the downtrodden stripes, white or black, thick or thin, that it again and again rolls mercilessly over.

Given then, that this is a fitting Communist tribute to those forever passed over by Coin, the ending comes as no surprise to anyone with the sense to feel.

The end of Coin draws near. The point has nearly come many times before, but each time Coin has prevailed and clawed its way back to centre stage.
This time, however, is the finality. The real fate of Coin and all those who follow it. In true dramatic fashion - Exit Stage Right.
Coin is no more. Coin has been burned out by its long, self-eating struggle to make headway on the backs of others. It has no more fight, it succumbs to the only possible solution. The only solution that was possible from the start. Sown into its very being by what gave it its intial spark.

And because Coin is no more, the world stops turning. Stunned, perhaps by its own actions. By its own ability to fling casually away, what it itself powered.

Peace descends.
The peace of the worker. Work is no more. Coin neither rules, nor does it hold the fascination. The worker is free of his labours, free of the pressing treadmill of modern demands. And free once more to contemplate a still, beautiful world. The director cleverly brings to the fore what has been in the background all this time - indigenous peoples, peoples with no need for Coin, continue. And in their continuing - as before, so as after - we see that to them, to the greater world, Coin was a temporary aberration.

The final scene, while perhaps moving on some levels, as Youth regains the focus and is brought out of the shadows and given a voice, might be seen by some to be somewhat disappointing.

I mean, he's a bit of a scabby git, isn't he?

This is a normal post Gervais has always been pretty shit
And a lot of his stuff has been almost Jim Davidson-esque. The office and the Karl Pilkington things were the only things he did of any merit and he's been living off them for a long time now.

his highpoint has been the relentless bullying of the 'idiot' character

He's a troll extraordinaire, you can never tell when he's serious or not.

Derek is absolutely fucking shite though, horrible, mean-spirited piece of work.
(, Fri 15 Feb 2013, 20:45, Reply)
This is a normal post How do you see it as mean spirited?
Just curious. I don't find it like that. I watched it thinking it would be utter shite, but I felt it was smarter than people gave it credit for.

For me the humour lies in getting to laugh at the dicks who treat the characters like dirt, as it shows them up to be utter cunts. I think it highlights a lot of prejudices and assuptions people make about the elderly and impaired and brings them out in the open.

I work with and I am also related to some of the most ignorant people who think mentally impaired people should be locked away, and I get to laugh at them cos they make themselves out to be cunts who aren't worth the time of day.

I guess I like Derek as it brings those assumptions out and shows everyone how stupid and damaging they can be.

Each to their own though.
(, Fri 15 Feb 2013, 21:11, Reply)
This is a normal post The mere fact that Gervais feels that what he is portraying
is a representation of people with mental disabilities is in itself utterly misguided at best and sneeringly patronising at worst. I'm assuming the former as I can't believe for a second that someone of Gervais' stature would intentionally mock the mentally impaired in portraying Derek however he is inadvertently mocking and deriding the real Dereks in this world with stereotypes and generic composites.

Sometimes, certain things are just not funny and even if you have all the greatest intentions in the world, the simple truth of a situation is just the truth and it cannot be parodied into light comedic entertainment.

when they are all so similar.

This is a normal post not clicking that because http://limmyisntfunny.blogspot.co.uk/
and I'm more interested in my nan's opinions than his, and I'm not the least bit interested in hers.

The Office was magnificent, Extras is a fine piece of work largely, but his stand-up is lazy and weak and Derek is patronising arrogant crap that shouldn't have got anywhere near the screen. But it's better than Life's Too Short.

But every time I hear it I just think of him. Jimmy Carr does all the sodding time. I heard Fearne Cotton do it once that really annoyed me. I'm sure there are others.

That was more rude English gent. Which Cleese had down to an art. The Gervais slimey after-comment is much more self referential. In an oily way. Yeah? *points at self like Brent*

A few years ago the whole 'meta racism' thing (a term Jimmy Carr coined I think) was all the rage. But now you look back and realise it was predominantly middle class white chaps doing it, I feel the irony doesn't stand the test of time so well.

That said I can't be smug, I did find Bo Selecta hilarious..

still do
