This is a normal post As someone who builds websites and has to deal with UX flows quite a lot,
it boggles my mind how they can let it get to this state.

Did no one in the management team not think at any point "I might just do a run through myself before we put this live"?

...or more scarily, they did, and thought "Yeah, that's pretty slick. SHIP IT!"

This is a normal post I'll bet this went through an absolute crapload of design meetings
It's got that aroma of design by committee.

You bet the guy writing this started off with something simple enough then Every Cunt from Legal thought of something that made him seem worthwhile, and that got added - then some former number cruncher remembered something about his daughter's phone being able to install rude dating apps (not that she has it, but he heard about it on a comedy show on radio 4 that he was too lazy to change the station), and demanded that a question be asked.

And like me when faced with the situation the web designers just gave up fighting and did exactly what they wanted and muttered "the customer is always right"
Then as soon as the site is delivered never contact them again and if they contact you claim you are way too busy to take on anymore work at moment.

This is a normal post Or more likely they thought
'We had to put our tender out at a low budget in order to win the contract and they've had their money's worth. Ship it.'

I had to renew my passport recently and was really suprised by the way the site worked and within 15 days I got my passport after filling in a form that took 5 mins and me sending them my old passport and new photos.
I was expecting all of your pain and a lot more.

https://www.gov.uk/apply-renew-passport

I looked into this about a year ago when I realised it would run out in a while and the process then was a huge clusterfuck and a huge form that was in pdf format which had real problems with saving it right etc. When I went back this year as the due date was coming the site had been redesigned and the old horrible pdf forms were gone.
Edit: I see they say BETA at the top of the site, I think this site was one of the first .gov sites to go through a rebuild.
It looks bad but the forms etc worked well for me.

i'm going through it now

hmmm A page alerts me to an error with missing mandatory data but the form handling that data doesnt indicate the mandatory field!!

basic stuff. I'm surprised you found it so easy.

BUT the rest of the application process seems much much easier. I want to change me name and it doesnt even ask me for any ID! this cant be right can it?

When the form is done you have to print it out, sign it and send them your old passport and new photo.
I guess this is where they are checking everything out and matching your signature and picture etc not online.
As I said I breezed through it unlike the nasty horrible pdf system they had before which was hell.

This is a normal post self assessment is one of the most unnecessarily painful experiences
really there should be a csv upload option for credits and debits to your business and as long as the file can be parsed with two minimum fields "date" and "amount" you get a big green tick

This is a normal post so much i could say about this
but probably best to keep quiet. They have been building this for years and you've got red tape and government bureaucracy to thank for it being so shit in the end.
