This is a question Books

We love books. Tell us about your favourite books and authors, and why they are so good. And while you're at it - having dined out for years on the time I threw Dan Brown out of a train window - tell us who to avoid.

Miracle technology
For most of you, an ebook reader like an ipad or kindle is a fancy new piece of technology, an advance and, for some even, an abomination. For me, it's been the best invention ever.
I'm partially sighted. I always loved reading when I was a child but because my eye issues are degenerative, reading was a thing of the past for me a few years ago. Now, with kindle on ipad, I can read again and you've no idea what it's like to gain back a much-missed hobby if you've never experienced a loss like that.
I can invert the colours (white font on black pages), enlarge text, dim or brighten the page according to my needs. It's a fecking miracle for someone like me. So next time you, or someone you know, bangs on about how such machines are killing 'real' books or whatever, spare a thought for someone like me who's had their life changed by them.

As for books, I love most styles. Favourite author if I had to choose though probably has to be Paul Auster, especially The New York Trilogy, Moon Palace and Mr Vertigo. His collection of real life stories (think the title is Stories of American Life but it escapes me right now) are also a fab read if you only have time for snipppets.

Well said.
Books aren't going anywhere any time soon. And anyway, eReaders, Kindles etc will do far less damage to the publishing industry than supermarkets 3 for 2 deals and £2.99 chick lit promotions ever will.

If people don't fancy a Kindle, good for them, but the 'only show off twats want Kindles' attitude is ridiculous. It's a cheap piece of kit that you can get in Asda, for fucks sake, it's hardly cutting edge hipster tech.

And if it helps people like you, then that's just fucking brilliant.

Kindle as the thing itself is too limited for me.
But as an app on say my Galaxy Tab? Perfection.

There's room for all sorts of media as far as I'm concerned

Great for me, different reasons.
I'm off travelling this year, six months on a bicycle throughout Europe. Being given a Kindle means I can take thousands of books with me without having to carry any of them, as well as download them at will on the road. It's a great piece of kit that genuinely benefits me greatly. Glad someone else has taken so many positives from one as well.

Nice one :)
They're also good for people who suffer with paralysis and don't have the dexterity to turn the pages of a book. Now they can just tap a screen!

sod the ipad
get an actual kindle… less eyeburn and you can make the text the size you need it.

Ipad was a present
and has a slightly bigger screen than a Kindle so actually the font size works very well for me. Have never tried using a Kindle though so I can't pass judgement there...
