My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

Before they retired, my parents had their own consulting business. One night, they took one of their new clients, a French-Canadian man with a tenuous grasp of English, out to dinner.
When the food arrived, the client hesitated before finally saying, "Good appetite!"
My mom tutted and replied, "In English, we say 'bon appetite.'"
