This is a question In the Army Now - The joy of the Armed Forces

I've never been a soldier. I was an air cadet once, but that mostly involved sitting in a mouldy hut learning about aeroplane engines with the hint that one day we might go flying.

Yet, anyone who has spent time defending their nation, or at least drinking bromide-laced-tea for their nation, must have stories to tell. Tell them now.

Not me, my Grandad*
He was in the army in India before it gained independence. He once had to deal with the aftermath of a cart-bomb (yes the t is deliberate), including assorted bits of an NCO.

He trained Gurkhas, so he must have been treble-hard once. He speaks near-fluent Urdu still. One might suspect that such experience would make him an open-minded sort of fella.

Yet, he is a monumental old racist. He also has a strong dislike of curry. Perhaps the two are connected. Not that I really give an ounce of badgercum about him, I assure you all.

*Actually my mum's stepfather
