This is a question Question of the Week suggestions

Each week we ask a question. The idea is to generate material that's:

* interesting to read, i.e. we won't get bored of reading the answers after about 10 of them
* not been asked on this site before
* fun to answer

What would you like to ask? (We've left this question open - so feel free to drop in ideas anytime.)

This is a QotW answer "It's supposed to be a challenge, it's a shortcut! If it were easy it would just be the way"
Short cuts always seem to have so much to offer, it's only when it all goes horribly wrong that you wish you hadn't tried to cut corners.

When has taking a short cut on something left you wishing that you'd stuck to the tried and tested route?

This is a QotW comment Are you sure that this is a good idea?
I took my girlfriend away for a long weekend camping in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire. By the time we arrived in Nottinghamshire I was feeling really grotty. My temperature was sky high, I felt shivery-shakey and I was sweating buckets.

After pitching the tent and having supper we decided to find the pub. The pub turned out to be a mile or so down the hill and left a bit.

After several pints and medicinal whiskies we sent off back to the campsite. My girlfriend suggested we take a lane that pointed more or less directly at the campsite thus neatly cutting off the corner. I wasn't convinced, but eventually gave in.

After a while the lane turned into a path. Later the path became a vague track. Finally the track entered a wood and as we had no torch we found it hard going.

My temperature started to rise again and I got woozy from the fever. We passed a gatehouse that had flickering candles in all the windows. It looked like a scene from a horror movie. I got really paranoid and half expected to be confronted by an evil monster lurking behind a tree!

After what seemed like ages we made it out of the wood and saw what looked like the campsite in the distance. Trouble was that there wasa small stream with steep banks in the way. Getting across the stream was hard because of a barbed wire fence on each bank! We started up the field and were suddenly confronted by massed ranks of staring eyes! Paranoia returned briefly but quickly went away when one of the owner's of the eyes said "Baa"!!
