Thanks in part to the idiocy of Julie Moult and the arrogance of the editorial director of Mail Online, I now have near to a dozen talented and well-motivated people ready to contribute to a brand new version of the Mail Watch website.
We have techies etc. to handle the back end of WordPress and they can make it functional and presentable, but I would prefer it to look *fabulous*.
If any b3tans would like to contribute to the visual design (ideally, you will also be able to carve your creation using WordPress), please message me. Cheers all.

... even though you're offering people work on something fun, prehaps with fiscal rewards.

People can change what they want.
Similar to how b3ta runs their profiles. (look at mine?) Then all you have to do is make nice-looking stuff or allow it to be customized.
That's part of the beauty of CSS.

It doesn't make me an artist.
:o)

Coding to allow for art removes your responsibility of it.
Have a few templates and allow people to add their own.

We're out to make a good first impression.

I can help with CSS if you can find a designer. I'm a coder, not an artist.

You: I want a designer to make things designed good.
Him: YOU CAN LET PEOPLE DESIGN THEIR OWN, IT'S WEB TWO POINT OH.
You: Yes, but we need a default design still, any decent designers out there.
Him: CUSTOMISATION !
...etc.

For high traffic applications you would be better off with a more robust CMS like Joomla.

But the server isn't under my control, so it's not my call. WP should be able to handle it.

not even a lot of money but a bit, although I do have most the technical knowledge and the time. I'm not that creative so if you tell me what you want and give me enough time I could be able to help you.

For that to work, I'd have to go out and do something for money. Let me think about it.
(My arse still hurts from last time.)

I've done stuff like this: www.bolloxcomics.co.uk/ and www.bowlerco.com/
Both of which were pre-existing templates which I've torn apart and done-up in my own design.
That the sort of thing you're after?
GAZ your response as I have to return back to work now! Zoom!
