(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 15:55, archived)
hmm.
I have that too, came on over the last couple of years. What do you use? nothing seems to work so far for me.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 15:56, archived)
Two things
OTC : Neutrogena/ probably the best non-prescription cream/ointment I've come across (and I've tried a few).

Prescription : Dovonex seems to work OK.

The Neutrogena has been a revelation.

(oh, and on your post down there - there was no way we were *not* flying - this holiday was more needed than Gordon Brown needs a facelift)
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:27, archived)
I use Dovobet as the best of a bad lot.
Same active as Dovonex. But even then it barely manages to keep it in check, not really improve things. all the others (steroids, coal-tar based ones) just make it worse.

thing is, I thought it was suppose to cycle, ie get better and worse naturally anyway? mine's just slowly been getting worse for a couple of years, nothing seems to touch it.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:34, archived)
Try the Neutrogena. I was really impressed. It won't "cure" it, but it does seem to stop the flaky-ness really well.
Otherwise, I can only suggest getting a referral to a specialist dermatologist. Oh, and make sure you are correctly diagnosed in the first place - I had about 20yrs being told I had eczema, only to discover that it was probably psoriasis all along.

Cyclic - my arse. Mine is only cyclic in the "it gets better when I remember/can be arsed to put the cream on" which fortunately the missus is good at bullying me into. I do find that sunshine helps - which might be a problem given your current location!
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:39, archived)
flakiness isn't a problem unless I don't put stuff on
it's the appearance that is the problem tbh, it's quite a lot of coverage on my legs. I've already been to a dermatologist privately but I'm being re-referred on the NHS to think about UV treatment.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:44, archived)
Mine was/is facial (yeah, insert joke about facial/cream here)
So steriods were dangerous. UV would fit with the sun helping (yeah, insert jokes about page 3 here).

Mind you, as a card-carrying scientific type, I should point out that all cases are different and what works for me, may not work for everyone.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:47, archived)
thank fuck, mine is so far not on the face
a little in what's left of my hairline. The dermatologist reckoned it started from a wound, which makes sense, as my legs are bugger all but scar tissue these days. But it's pretty bad on my legs, less so on my arms and torso. Would be fucking nice to find something that works, though. I'm almost considering stopping smoking and drinking to see if that helps. It's got that bad.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:52, archived)
Mine started as patches on my elbows/ankes and then suddenly hit my face.
It flares up when I'm stressed. After the holiday it's actually really quite calm - which is probably a combination of sun, relaxation and lots of swimming in saline-solution.

On a good day, it's just red - and I look a bit like Sir Alex Ferguson/a random alky.
On a bad day, I swear I lose my own body-weight in deadskin.

I don't smoke - so I can't comment on that, and drinking seems to make little difference.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:58, archived)

www.althealth.co.uk/product/details/fsc/cantamega_2000/90_tabs/

my dad used to have psoriasis up both of his arms to the extent that they were often red raw up to his elbows (insert strikethrough here) some hippe herbalist guy he knows suggested these and they cleared it up within a month or so.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:44, archived)
Curious
that's just a multivitamin pill. still, if it works for him, all good.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:50, archived)
most of what uv treatments do is put vitamins directly into the skin.
same principle, different application method.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:51, archived)
less risk of uv based melanoma this way too :D

(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:53, archived)
almost no risk of UV melanoma
the treatment is filtered for UVB these days. So you can't use it as a free tannin session either ;)
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:57, archived)
it's a bit more than that
but I take the point. The argument is that you can't just use a different application method, a lot of things can't be absorbed into the body via oral administration. Most vitamins can't be absorbed without the right cofactors, for instance. It's why you are mostly wasting your time trying to get iron from spinach or broccoli rather than red meat. It's there but you can't absorb it.

but it's worth a look anyhow, cheers.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:56, archived)
for the sake of £20
i would say its worth a shot for a couple of months..
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:59, archived)
true dat ;)
I might try some boggo multivits for a while first though, but it's bookmarked.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 17:02, archived)
Homeopathy - scientifically bollocks, but if it works for you - who cares! :)

yeah, I know
but that's not homeopathy, it's just expensive vegetarian multivits.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 17:07, archived)
Ah, fair enough, I didn't actually look at the link :S

(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 17:11, archived)
I wouldn't be surprised if eczema could be managed by placebo effect, though,
I've had it since I was wee and it seems to respond more to my frame of mind than anything else.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 17:18, archived)
get a really bad case of the shits
After a heavy bout mine clears up for a few days. They don't tell you that at the dermatologists. It's peculiar and possibly not a day to day solution but what do you expect, i'm no doctor.

if yuo 've had it for years, your brain should have corrected your hearing
and blocked that ringing frequency out by now.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 15:57, archived)
I can't hear it if I am in an office or outdoors, I am that used to it
but as soon as any office/central heating hum stops, it's quite loud.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:08, archived)
I've had it since I was 12 and it doesn't work like that.
Although it only bothers me when I go to a club and make it worse.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:09, archived)
i dont have it,
but somebody in the office claims to have it now. They told me that their doctor said that their brain will cancel out the ringing frequency. this is where I learnt this information. If it is wrong, he and his doctor are shit.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 16:52, archived)
I've listened to loud music all day, played at 140db in bands all my life and work with audio headphones on all day and another 2 going behind me
I've got amazing hearing still!

I can hear the doors closing on the tubes when I live over a mile away from the station.

But when I'm at a party and someone is talking in front of me I have to listen to the them really carefully as all I can hear is every conversation going on around me :S

Apparently it's human nature to try and listen to other conversations
there was something about it on Tomorrow's World once, and that kinda shit you can't sweep up under no rug.
(, Mon 2 Nov 2009, 17:10, archived)
I get that, the hearing of ever conversation.
That's why I hate loud pubs.

Apparently it's an anxiety thing, from when we were animals and needed to hear lions to survive.
