» Strange things you've been paid to do

I've paid my dues godammit
Night shift in a bread factory, 8 hours of standing over a conveyor belt, watching as all the little individual trays of pre-baked dough passed by.

My purpose, to pick off any odd lumps so all the bread was nicely bread-shaped when it passed through the oven on the other side of the warehouse.

It's amazing how quickly the smell of freshly baked bread slipped way, way down my 'best smells ever' list.

The only positive thing to be taken from this experience, was the fact that any subsequent job I've had, however dull, has felt like a non-stop rock and roll mind-scramble of excitement.

» Best Films Ever

Miller's whatnow?
My top five is always a constantly revolving list based on twenty or so of my favourite films and pinning it down is always a right bastard.

However, there's one film that is as enjoyable every time I sit down to watch it -
Miller's Crossing

I'd like to say that in terms of dialogue, cinematography, casting etc the Coens peaked with this one, but ignoring the double "eh?!" of Intolerable cruelty and The Ladykillers, they just keep cranking out the genius.

I won't waste space recommending specific bits and pieces; I doubt I could do it any kind of justice anyway, just know that if you're any kind of film fan it's pure gold from start to finish.

To quote Barry Sonnenfeld
"...A handsome film about men in hats..."
