edit: just found this, alt-usage-english.org/I_before_E.html some people have "extensions" to the rule, like "well, well, but, it doesn't apply if it rhymes with 'hay' like in neighbour!" and "well, well, err, it doesn't apply when you have a plural like 'democracy' or err err it FUCKING APPLIES ALL RIGHT?"
