i was wondering how to do him, but got fixated on the laurel wreath, which would make it far too many shapes.

well, yeah,
but, well i dunno, that doesn't seem right, 'cos then that ceasar would be in only 6 shapes. i was treating each shape replication as a new one, really

That's what I haven't been sure about.
My Moby one uses just one shape. But it's been repeated loads of times...

well, with that kind of thinking,
you could post any old picture and argue that it's made up of lots of different coloured squares - the pixels
