# There
are levels to which even i would not sink, and I would not touch racism as its just wrong with no defence for it at all.
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 0:34, archived)
# Indeed
I've always really liked the fact that b3tans can make jokes about abortion, rape, paedophillia, murder, illness etc - but none of us would ever think of illustrating a racist joke.

# Nope
we are sick, but not that bad.
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 0:37, archived)
# the fuck?!
why the hell is that a more offensive subject than many of the other ones we touch on. The humour still comes from re-affirming stereotypes and marginalising people's views. A lot of black humour is about laughing at the people who actually hold the views which you consider offensive. I've not seen this post so i can't comment specifically, but to rule it out just because it's racism is pretty disingenuous.

# yes, but...
...too often racism can flourish because it isn't addressed in any fashion. sometimes a joke which plays on racial differences can have good or neutral intent and provide a forum for discussion. if people were to speak honestly and not assume intent when the intent is at worst ambiguous, we'd solve more problems than just ignoring things ever would.

this is a message board focused on funny pictures, so race will inevitably pop up. how we deal with it indicates more about ourselves, as individual responders, than it does about the image(s) that provoke us, usually (i confess i did not see the pic that inspired all this).
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 0:59, archived)
# The pic posted was a mock myspace thingy
Instead of 'myspace', it said 'myspade', with a picture of a black guy on it.

It's obvious now that it wasn't posted with malicious intent, but I still found it uncomfortable to see.
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 1:02, archived)
# merci
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 1:08, archived)
# ah, thanks.
'spade' is archaic where i live. it seems almost like more of a joke poking at myspace types, especially given that they've been the butt of a few jokes here lately.

i can see why people were unimpressed, though. it's the sort of joke that many would prefer not to see, or see only when made by someone verifiably in the marginalised group.

# 'diability'...
...heh, i'm picturing 'special' demons, imps in wheelchairs, etc.

and, as a queermo, i see the intent of almost all of the 'gay' humour here as fairly compassionate, not stupid slagging.

though race (and religion) are the two big boys for 'bigger-than-jackie-chan' sized world conflicts / massacres

erm.. and oil, land, doubloons, care bear kingdoms, taking over castle greyskull etc

anyhow - i have no point :)

# Indeed it is, the death penalty is used from time to time, in the middle-east
I agree with you lemony on basically everything, b3ta is sick and people who make anti-racist comments on here are being hypocritical, since it's partically their fault this sorta prejudice still exists.
Each type of prejudice supports the others...

(No apologies for length or seriousness, either)
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 1:17, archived)
# dunno
more with postbear on this one.. all actions (and posts in this case) are amoral until they're shaded with intention..

up to us to decide the very grey line between humour and sensitivity i think
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 1:24, archived)
# Perhaps I'm biased...
I DESPISE homophobia, so... yeah...

All other prejudices just seem evil, because they're almost exactly the same in their own way.
Don't get me wring, racism is one of the worst, but they're all awful, and I just wish B3ta wouldn't allow the sort of racism and general wrongness that comes about... at very least, if it's tasteless, the author should link to it, rather than post it...
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 1:36, archived)
# well, that depends.
i have a mixed racial background, and i guess it's easier to differentiate between humour and malignance masquerading as humour for me than some. still, i realise that any sort of racism will be ill-received, no matter what the intention.

it's even tough to address racism as a concept for some people, because they are rather touchy or believe others around them are sensitive. for me, it's all about intent. if a person seems out to demean others, i'm less tolerant of the 'joke', but much of humour depends upon differences, perceived and real, so racial humour need not be offensive (though it often is).

and stuff.
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 0:44, archived)
# yes, this
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 0:47, archived)
# i reckon you've got it there.
perhaps paedo/rape/death jokes are tolerated here because they are blatanly not aimed to offend. But with racist slurs it's just too borderline?
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 0:54, archived)
# Going back to my original 'Gah, there is a fine line between 'edgy' humour and racism' reply
:)
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 0:56, archived)
# ha!
so it does.
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 0:57, archived)
# I dunno, I think maybe that's a bit optimistic. I'm afriad the truth is probably more subjective than that.
I think, realistically (and depressingly), it has more to do with statistics - when we post a 'hilarious' rape/disability 'shop, we kinda know we're statistically unlikely to be mortally offending someone on the board at that time who has direct experience of those things. that's much less likely with racial stuff. so actually, we're just doing what we feel we can probably 'get away with' - and, as such, our reluctance is arguably based more on selfish cosiderations than altruistic ones.

/devil's advocate.

but yes, even with that being the case, i comletetly agree that they should be kept off the board. apart from the many more highbrow arguments, they're just never funny.
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 1:00, archived)
# some of the funniest humour ever has been race related... perhaps the cardinal example being richard pryor, but similarly the mass of jewish humour that's been made over the years

# richard pryor for cardinal!
lenny bruce for pope!

me for god!
(, Thu 29 Dec 2005, 1:14, archived)
# well...
...paedo jokes are allowed because the incidence rates of paedophilia are perceived to be so low that it's unlikely that anyone here is guilty. rape is more common, and there is controversy with rape jokes as well as the racial ones. death, though, is universal. if i make a diana car crash joke, i do so fully knowing that after i gack, someone might well make a joke about me (and let's face it, those sort of jokes are more at the expense of celebrity that they are about her).

racism's just too invisible and is (and is perceived as) far more common than most other societal trauma, so it's a touchier subject to deal with.

but I've had a few drinks. :)

it's a strange beast, the B3ta sensibility - basically, that kinda thing just doesn't fly. as the above poster said, there are allegedly more un-PC things that don't get slated. i'm glad there is a shred of humanity kicking around, but occasionally it can seem a bit arbitrary. don't fret about it, we're hardly the ultimate guardians of moral fibre, are we? ;) just keep off the skin stuff and you'll be fine.

# Yeah i'm ok...here is the mad story...
...So there i was, out with friends tonight, good company and beer flowing. Couple of pubs and then into town for a curry...Then it all got a bit awkward, the friends i was out with included family that only get together once a year at this time and i got sucked into a deep family argument, so i chose to make my excuses and leave on my own...

Walking home i got "approached" by a group of five lads who i'd say where in their mid-twenties or older (not chavs). They demanded my wallet "or else". Now, with my experience of the world, maybe helped by the shitholes i've been to and the scum i've come across during a 15 year military career i realised instantly it was shit or bust time...

The trick (for you younger lads) is to go for the BIGGEST guy, so i did, launched in and put him on his arse (i think i may have broken, or at least badly bruised) my hand. Once on the floor the other 4 came towards me...

Now for the second trick...

In your most confident voice and pointy finger tell them in no uncertain terms that, "You either put me in hospital or on my ****ing arse straightaway, or i WILL cane you ALL to within an inch of your life"...

It sounds shit written down but these guys faltered, looked at each other, turned around and virtually RAN away, leaving me in an alley with ****nuts at my feet and my blood pumping...

So what did i do? Stick the boot in? Call the police?

Nope, i helped him up, had a chat, shook his hand and as unbelievably as it may sound he has just left my house having had a cold can of Carling and apologising for his antisocial behaviour.

I've had a lot of mad experiences in this life, but tonight rates right up there...

Bizarre.
