Copy one picture, paste it into the graphics program of your choice, then paste the other as a layer on top of the frist, then set it to 50% transparency and all shall become clear.

IE highlights by making every other pixel black.
Other things add a transparent grey over the top.

lots of noise, then create text as selection, negative image the words shaped selection, then deselect and negative the whole image.
I spent unreasonable lengths of time trying to work out how to make a way of encrypting colour pictures with this.
