Checked it's tear and tensile strengths
the thickness, the colour, the veslic and taber rubfastnesses. That kind of thing.

Not to the same standard that I could, no.
None of this over simplified Pantone stuff. This was full on CIELAB colour space assessment.

The company I worked in the QC lab for
mostly made leather for Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Prince Charles's personal carriage, the House of Lords. That sort of thing. If someone is spending £100,000 on a car, they want to know that they can replace a seat panel if they tear it. We had to get the colour to match every other batch that had ever been made and so that it looked the same under daylight, sodium street lamps, flourescent tubes in their garage etc.

What of the stress-strain curves? And the intermittent plasticity under random temperature variations?

We did also make leather for
um...slightly odder customers. There was one customer who wanted an entire room upholstered in unfinished leather. I guess some people find that sort of thing quite sexy but without the varnish on it, it will stain really easily with any body fluids.

Not too bad.
Most of the 'smell' of leather is due to the chemicals put on to tan it and preserbe it.

Oh don't ruin the magic.
The tannery place in Nottingham smells horrid.
