This is a link post Made a little film about my hermit crab and his struggles with the grumpy goby. I made this!
(alternative title: new camera, wanted to test it and am in a silly mood).

This is a normal post Haha, great!
Are those little claws that he keeps clicking in front of him, or little feelers?

I had a pet crayfish for a while, rescued from a local river. Not as cool as hermit crab though - salt water tank is it?

This is a normal post They're little filters that collect yummy things from the water.
I like to believe they are castanets though.

edit: And yes, sorry, salt water! It's a UK native marine tank. Live next to the beach so it's just a holiday home for them (have set it up with advice from gf's dad who is a marine biologist; not mixing storebought animals and being careful and good).

This is a normal post So did he come with a shell
or did you strew an assortment of potential homes around the tank, for him to pick from?

This is a normal post He's a deep sea hermit crab that was washed up in a storm on Weymouth beach,
gf's dad rescued him for me. In his shell. I go collecting every so often and pick up shells of various sizes to have in there; they like to switch and try on new ones. I only have him and a smaller 'hairy' hermit crab.

This is a normal post Wow I love that they try on new ones every so often!
"do my castanets look big in this?"

This is a normal post Whenever the big one changes shell,
the little one will immediately go and find a new one. I think perhaps in part due to what Fronds posted but these are very different crabs and there's plenty to choose from. I think he just gets jealous.

This is a normal post They are quite ugly without a shell.

This is a normal post do you provide new shell when he outgrows one?

This is a normal post Horrific things. He's a pagurus prideaux and forms a symbiotic relationship
with cloak anemones. There are two in the tank and usually he has one on his shell but the other day he had two which made it a bit heavy so I got to see him change shells. Ick.

This is a normal post I loved that. I initially bought the crab to buy land hermit crabs, exactly the
same as the video, until I found out they are wild-caught as they can't be bred in captivity. Possibly even from that very beach as they don't exist in many places. Instead went the native marine tank route and by using local seawater, animals, etc, they can just come into my tank on little holidays!

This is a normal post Very cool indeed - wel jel
Wish I didn't live two hours from the sea. Sigh.

This is a normal post Carrying 65 litres of sea water back to my flat, even in four trips
and even using a car, nearly killed me. I fear water changes.

This is a normal post Plenty of shells, I collect bigger/smaller/same size opening shells on the beach
every so often. He's in this one as he's having problems with his favourite shell. Has only been in that one for today, I'm sure he'll find a better one soon.

This is a normal post That is totally uncool.
Although that fish has a silly face. No wonder it's angry.

Also, I might add that this touched me so deeply I can't stop weeping.

This is a normal post My brother had an extreme sports hermit crab in our tank.
It'd try and trap air bubbles in its shell from the filter outlet and ride them as high as it could without rolling over. Or it'd climb to the top of the highest rocks and leap off, then when it landed it'd run round and do it again.

This is a normal post Haha, I shall hope one of mine
becomes as extreme as that one day.
