even if you're not impressed, i'd say it qualifies as art
since you admit that he's pretending to be edgy, then you at least recognise it as somewhat edgy, but perhaps your disaffection with what you perceive as insufficiently edgy art causes you to reject the work as pretentious.
I don't think it's edgy at all myself. messy, certainly, but mostly just colourful, imaginative fun.
