This is a normal post old jazzer trick
soak your finger tips in urine. Other than that, just play, a lot. Even then a full on gig will end with blood spattered all over your bass and blisters that have grown, torn off, re-blistered, torn off.. etc. Oh and old strings will be much worse than shiny smooth new ones.

you can make a nice old verdigris for paint mixing this way.
