And his resignation has nothing, officially, to do with Jimmy Saville.
He's standing down because Newsnight broadcast allegations of child abuse that were unsubstantiated, and afterwards withdrawn.
Presumably, the BBC has staff lawyers who really should have stopped specific details going to air. I don't understand how they let that one slip past.
