and he's a really nice guy, humorously self effacing and with a lazy charm all his own (and said my jacket was cool) :-)

This is a normal post Almost every crap 80s action series was partially redeemed by having a cracking soundtrack.
MacGyver is no exception to this rule of mine. See also Streethawk, Airwolf, Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazzard, Hardcastle & McCormack, the Fall Guy...

This is a normal post Why don't they make FUN series like this anymore?
Just something you can dip in and out of when you fancy it.
It's all about backstory, and 'series arcs' now.

I think person of Interest is the closest thing to this kind of show, but even that has backstory taking up valuable punch up/car chase/gun fight time

This is a normal post Ok, Nazis, WW2, coffin Jetski, for some reason the Jetski inside the coffin is made to look like wood.
What am I missing that explains any of this?
