I've been reading a book
called 'Gothic' by Richard Davenport-Hines (get me, eh?), and there's a quote somewhere near the front which I think is very true. It's something like: "The Gothic aesthetic attracts many practitioners who have no understanding of the subtlety and wit of its best examples. In other words, an enormous amount of 'Gothic' output is trite and worthless. "
