yup
these guys have been trying to get their game funded for many years but not enough people are throwing the monies, they have a kickstarter up atm but time is short and so is their target
www.kickstarter.com/projects/zeropointsoftware/interstellar-marines-prologue
it's looking bleak, pity because on my "do before i die" list number 3 is "receive massive hemorrhage from a shark with legs in virtual world"

for those who use direct comms people to get jumped on by nearby zomboids.
DayZ is another game that i hope turns out well when its finished, had to stop playing when i realised the zombies were just bath-pathing, teleporting annoyances

What news of Helmsdeep? He hasn't posted anything on his blog for a couple of weeks. When was turn on day?
I'm getting worried.

This would certainly solve the problem of the gobby cunt on voice chat by making him an instant target
I thought of this feature years ago back playing Halo on the original xbox.
I can only imagine that it's not common place because it takes too many cpu cycles to render the 3d audio of all the players.
Or someones sitting on a patent.

Loads of people have been developing this in various ways, Dolby have a system too.
But frankly I reckon not a lot of people would want it in a multiplayer FPS. If they want to talk to people, they want to just assume that they'll be heard, without having to go round the corner to find them.
It might make more sense in a game like Planetside, which is a sprawling MMO environment.

Something like this happens in Left 4 Dead 2.
In The Parish section, if you're using in-game chat during the storm you cannot be heard unless you stay close together. Think it happens in the levels near the sugar plantation, too. Used to piss me off so I used Steam Chat instead.
