This is a link post It's a research project, honest I made this!
I'm going to win the metro Sudoku prize every day from now on. I'm very pleased with this - apparently all those years doing a PhD weren't a complete waste. Please be kind.

Just yesterday I said to my girlfriend that it should be possible to make a computer solve a sudoku. Pity I'm so shit at coding that even html eludes me.

.. are created by computers. Afterwards the computers solve them by using the same set of techniques that a human would probably do (i.e. not the simple-to-code brute force approach that a computer programmer would usually choose for a task such as this). The number of steps to solve, and the types of techniques, are used to rate its difficulty. As far this is how I've heard it works.

Anyway, writing a computer program to solve a sudoku is an easy task. The really nice thing about the app in the video was how it found the sudoku on the photo, and how it recognized the numbers. Also seems like a nice UI.

I am still a bit surprised that it works so well.

Normally when you start using any image processing algorithms you find that they don't quite work as well as you were lead to believe by the pretty pictures in the research papers.

Even though I must have run it hundreds of times doing testing. It still puts a smile on my face.

I think I went a bit over the top on the iPhone version trying to add too many bells and whistles when I should have stuck to the fun bit of grabbing the puzzle and solving it.

Bloody hell that's going to be difficult to do!

Maybe the Kakuro could be doable. The killer one will be tricky - those little dotted lines that tell you where the groups of numbers are going to be hard to locate reliably.

And as an iphone user myself I have inevitably downloaded it. It's a piece of advertising I'm willing to accept. But I must say (whilst intriguingly aware of the "not the place to slag off other member's work" but I hope this is more constructive and its best to say it here and not rate your dealie badly) whilst trying it out, reaching the "check the number's" function there is no done button visible and I've been unable to get further than that.

But from the looks of things that's fab. I truly hope you can craft a crossword one. though I imagine that's just a matter of simultaneous searching on google and/or the free dictionary or maybe online OED (if it doesn't stiff you for it), really.

Moreover, you are now my idol, I truly wish I had considered the "wait to say something before saying it" logic at the time of giddy b3ta joining. Here's to hoping you haven't just left this thread alone and will return.

Thanks for downloading it!

I'm not really expecting to make very much out of it, but it is nice to finally be able to put those years at University to use. Apparently you can learn a lot by spending time in the bar :)

If the done button doesn't appear then it's recognised one or two of the numbers incorrectly and the puzzle can't be solved. If you correct the numbers then the done button should appear.

I wish I had the hummus to post more, but it's sadly lacking. I have just taken delivery of a graphics tablet though! Cannot for the life of me work out how to use it...
