These Art students in a Gibraltar school got suspended for making a Harlem Shake video
Not only that, were banned from using the Art room and lost their free periods. Over the top? I think so. So please give them some love. Not my video, but a friends.

Lunchtime reading: the Battle of Hoth
Okay, I know. It's quite sad. But this is a very, very nerdy analysis of the Battle of Hoth, and why it was a military disaster.
"When Vader enters the Hoth System with the Imperial Fleet, he’s holding a winning hand. What follows next is a reminder of two military truths that apply in our own time and in our own galaxy: Don’t place unaccountable religious fanatics in wartime command, and never underestimate a hegemonic power’s ability to miscalculate against an insurgency."
Also, there's a sequel, in which actual military historians, political analysts and such respond to the article.
It's like those conversations you had at 3am as a student, but involving people who really should know better.

One of the minor details of a good SF film is spaceships that look like spaceships: Discovery and Alexei Leonov in 2000/ 2010, Nostromo in Alien, and so on. Even the Borg cube things.

The Star Destroyers are designed to enter an atmosphere - e.g. Clone Wars
The design of the USS Enterprise is supposedly to enable smooth warping (and it sometimes enters an atmosphere).
The B-Movie spaceships and flying saucers often moved from atmosphere to space.
Also, you never know when you'll hit a dust cloud or Mutara Nebula.

I'm now wondering whether there'd be much advantage to making sci-fi spaceships aerodynamically efficient.
After all, if you're packing enough power to travel faster than light, a bit of wind-resistance in the couple of minutes it'll take you to get into and out of an atmosphere isn't going to make any real difference, is it?

I was just reading some budgets on wikipedia
and Terminator 3 was listed, Director $5m, Producers $10m, Cast $35m, and
then right at the bottom of the list it had 'other costs - 33.6million'
That must be the catering.

Chillingly realistic portrayal of NYC (and the twin towers) getting wasted at 1:19. LOVE the repeated use of the *buhwaaBUHWHOOOOORRH* 80s explosion noise that was all the rage back then. You know the one.

Something I love about Russian youtube videos:
Unlike those from the US, there's rarely someone screaming "OH MY GAAAAWWWDDD!" all the time.
Russians are so lackadaisical about it all.

Now read Flat Earth News by Nick Davies.
He shows how much the under-staffed newspapers of this country are forced to carry stories from AP, Newswire and PR agencies. Even in the Times, 79% of its stories weren't being checked and taken as gospel from these sources. It's all fucked up.

Walthamstow is fucking horrible
Although my memories from the 80s may be slightly outdated.
Does that concrete prison of a shopping centre still exist, next to the worlds scariest looking council swimming pool?

Jesus, Walthamstow is bleak.
say what you like about hipsters, but they are systematically rejuvenating shitty parts of London.
Dalston was a dump, and now it's really very nice. They made Shoreditch trendy and this attracted a lot of commercial investment. See also Haggerston, parts of Brixton & Hackney & Deptford.
The process goes: Hipsters look for somewhere cheap & run-down with boarded-up shops to start their laudable but laughable businesses/shops/studios/cafes/venues in.
They find a likely area and start to colonise it. Soon other people/London media notice that XX is now becoming trendified and this accelerates the process and people want to go there to hang out, see/do/buy interesting stuff.
Demand for space increases with the prosperity/trendiness of the area, and after a few years commercial and residential rents increase have risen to the point where up-and-coming hipsters can't afford it, so the cycle begins again.

True
You've got to feel a bit sorry for the people who live there already though. Gentrification, even gentrification-via-hipsters, eventually means no one can afford to live there.

not really, everyone benefits. The place becomes a bit cleaner and there's a lot more activity going on.
And it's not really gentrification, more hipsterisation. It usually sits nicely alongside the old mens boozers etc. Few people complain that we only have 2 pound shops now, and we used to have 6.

I don't feel sorry for anyone in Walthamstow
Once they stop stabbing each other, burgling everywhere and setting things on fire, then I might feel sorry for them but until then, they are the perfect match for the hipsters.

There is a nice aspect to walthamstow
there is a genuine community feeling there
Unfortunately you can barely see it underneath a see of stabbings, burglaries, arson, mattresses and filth
I lived there for over 10 years and am so glad to be away from it.
Been back the past two weekends to see mates and do not miss it one bit
