How do you see it as mean spirited?
Just curious. I don't find it like that. I watched it thinking it would be utter shite, but I felt it was smarter than people gave it credit for.
For me the humour lies in getting to laugh at the dicks who treat the characters like dirt, as it shows them up to be utter cunts. I think it highlights a lot of prejudices and assuptions people make about the elderly and impaired and brings them out in the open.
I work with and I am also related to some of the most ignorant people who think mentally impaired people should be locked away, and I get to laugh at them cos they make themselves out to be cunts who aren't worth the time of day.
I guess I like Derek as it brings those assumptions out and shows everyone how stupid and damaging they can be.
Each to their own though.

The mere fact that Gervais feels that what he is portraying
is a representation of people with mental disabilities is in itself utterly misguided at best and sneeringly patronising at worst. I'm assuming the former as I can't believe for a second that someone of Gervais' stature would intentionally mock the mentally impaired in portraying Derek however he is inadvertently mocking and deriding the real Dereks in this world with stereotypes and generic composites.
Sometimes, certain things are just not funny and even if you have all the greatest intentions in the world, the simple truth of a situation is just the truth and it cannot be parodied into light comedic entertainment.

My Wife watches Derek.
She also watches Gypsy Weddings, X Factor and Hollyoaks. I think that sums it up nicely.

when they are all so similar.

not clicking that because http://limmyisntfunny.blogspot.co.uk/
and I'm more interested in my nan's opinions than his, and I'm not the least bit interested in hers.
The Office was magnificent, Extras is a fine piece of work largely, but his stand-up is lazy and weak and Derek is patronising arrogant crap that shouldn't have got anywhere near the screen. But it's better than Life's Too Short.

Got to be honest, I don't think there's much need for me to play the game now, as I think you've pretty much covered it :)

I can't work out if people did the slimey after-comment thing before Gervais.
But every time I hear it I just think of him. Jimmy Carr does all the sodding time. I heard Fearne Cotton do it once that really annoyed me. I'm sure there are others.

basil fawlty had quite a line in similar slimey after-comments, kinda.

Hmmm. That wasn't trying to be cool though.
That was more rude English gent. Which Cleese had down to an art. The Gervais slimey after-comment is much more self referential. In an oily way. Yeah? *points at self like Brent*

I SAID 'KINDA'...
but yes, good analysis. you would have sounded even more cleverer if you had said 'oleaginous' instead of 'oily'.

You'll have to make do with Parking Pataweyo.
I know there isn't anything really racist about that sketch, but it did make me feel a bit awkward. Probably because it wasn't funny.

A few years ago the whole 'meta racism' thing (a term Jimmy Carr coined I think) was all the rage. But now you look back and realise it was predominantly middle class white chaps doing it, I feel the irony doesn't stand the test of time so well.
That said I can't be smug, I did find Bo Selecta hilarious..
still do
( , Fri 15 Feb 2013, 19:41, Share, Reply)
Gah! That makes me hate Jimmy Carr
the fact he coined a term like that. Bo Selecta! was amazing
it was just so well timed for the generation it was aimed at.

1. The preceding fragments have already hit Russia
2. The Mayans warned us and were out by a minimal fraction
3. It's Friday the 15th, which I think you'll agree is a little TOO close to Friday 13th to be a coincidence.
4. erm... that's all.
