RooftopSummer of 2002. In the spring I had moved to Copenhagen for my first "real" job after getting my C.S. degree. My fears were put to shame: I was treated well, paid well and I was not asked to work more that 37 hours a week. In a tremendous stroke of luck, I had managed to rent a cheap, spacious, and very centrally located apartment for the summer. I had been with my girlfriend -- the same girl who I'll marry next month -- for less than half a year. She was studying in another city but we spent the weekends together.
There was a ladder at the top of the building which led to an attic. A small door led from the attic to a small, horizontal rooftop.
One warm summer evening, we dragged food, wine and candles to the rooftop and dined under the blue sky. We watched the sunset and the midnight fireworks from Tivoli. We then made a bed, made love and went to sleep under the stars.
We woke up to a chilly but beautiful morning and I felt like the king of the world.
