This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Think I might have a few of these....
...a few for starters

1) Double Negatives

2) Young Children wearing jewellery

3) People who call tomato ketchup 'red sauce'

4) Cars with '........ on Board'. Well done (!?) for procreating/ your children procreating/ having a child with ADHD.

Actually saw a car with 'Minger on board' not even a hint of irony on seeing the driver!

A mate of mine...
...has one of those 'BABY ON BOARD' signs (which do indeed annoy the fuck out of me for the reasons you stated and more besides) in the back of his car that reads:

'PERSON NO LESS VALUABLE THAN A BABY ON BOARD'

That one can be excused, surely? :)

that's funny
It wouldn't occur to me to call ketchup 'tomato ketchup' (I do know that mushroom ketchup exists/-ed, but still it amused me)

If you've got a brown sauce...
like HP... then it makes sense that what's not the brown sauce is the red sauce.

double negatives
can't remember where i heard it, but it goes a little something like this:

maths teacher: two negatives make a positive, but two positives can never make a negative.

student: yeah, right.
