Following Lucyvanpelt's structure:
I liked your division of films and I started to think about mine...

Silly Film - Airplane, Naked Gun, About a Boy. I don't "lol" very often at films, but I do at these ones. Therefore, top marks for silliness. About a Boy has more serious and sometimes sad scenes, but it still makes me chuckle like a loon.

Weepy Film - Anything when I'm feeling hormonal. I've been known to cry at films with Meg Ryan in, for god's sake.

Beautiful Film - Brassed Off. Very true to my heart as a little one growing up during Thatcher's reign of terror in a mining village. Excellently portrayed.

Feelgood Film - Sound of Music / Calamity Jane / My fair Lady / Oliver. Yes, yes - I'm a musical slut. Completely fabulous musical numbers, dancing and actually some great gags and heartfelt moments. And, of course, everyone gets their man in the end. Back of the net!

Most Underrated Film - Jackie Brown. Nobody else ever seems to mention it much when they think of Tarantino, and for me it's the greatest. The soundtrack is ace, the plot is a complete hook that pulls you in and the acting is superb. Samnuel L Jackson, Pam Grier and Roberto DeNiro. What more do you want?!

Least Deserving of Praise - Lost in translation. Sorry, I just didn't get the point. I was a bit bored throughout.

Just an All Round Great Film - Breakfast at Tiffany's. You know you want to be her and the kitty is the most fluffiest and fantastic ever.

Biggest Guilty Pleasure - Wizard of Oz.

Heat.
It's too long, often slow moving and probably my absolute favourite, because in light of its flaws its something I don't watch regularly, and appreciate the times I do.

Plus the look on Hank Azaria's face after the immortal "Because she's got a GREAT ASS" line is a crackup. It wasn't scripted, and he'd been expecting a different line.

Russian sci-fi
For me the single most stunning and beautiful film ever has got to be Andre Tarkovski's 1972 version of Solaris.

Dubbed by many to be the cold war response to 2001 it still stands the test of time.

I'm suprised that Hollywood didn't option more of Stanislaw Lem's work as they offer a unique slant of sci-fi (in much the same way that they took Philip K Dick to their studios).

Dig it out and get it watched - the most underated film ever.

Old hat...and probably bindun...but hey ho...

Seeing as it's Thursday and I've run out of 'relevant' things to post...I thought I'd dust off the old list of:

'Star Wars quotes with sexual connotations'

1. She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid.
2. Curse my metal body, I wasn't fast enough!
3. Look at the size of that thing!
4. Sorry about the mess...
5. You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought.
6. You've got something jammed in here real good.
7. Put that thing away before you get us all killed.
8. Luke, at that speed do you think you'll be able to pull out in time?
9. Get in there you big furry oaf, I don't care WHAT you smell!
10. You're all clear kid. Now let's blow this thing and go home!
11. Get on top of it!...(I’m trying!)
12. You are required to manoeuver straight down this trench...
13. I'm on the leader.
14. Negative, negative... It didn't go in...It Just impacted on the surface.
15. Evacuate? In our moment of triumph?
16. This oil bath is going to feel so good!
17. It'll be just like Beggar's Canyon back home.
18. TK-421, why aren't you at your post?
19. This is Red 5, I'm going in!
20. The last time I felt it, was in the presence of my old master.
21. Pull out Wedge, you can't do any more good back there!

23. They came from behind!

Please feel free to add any more if you are as bored as I am...

Laputa...
Long time reader, first time poster, etc

A long long time ago I saw a really funky animated film on TV. This was when I still lived in England so I must've been less than 7 years old. Channel 3... put the tape in... ready to press record.

This film was Laputa (sometimes called Castle in the Sky nowadays). A fabulous fable about a floating island, sky pirates, the military and secret services, a "brick muppet", and a rather irritating little girl in a blue dress with a magic necklace.

I know most of the words, yet I still giggle at the truly corny lines. It's the first film I remember wondering "what language is that" when the end credits played. I'd never even heard of Japanese before. It's the first film I ever loved, and I wore out the tape it was recorded on. I was excessively happy when I saw it was being re-released on DVD. Then I had a serious attack of rage when I discovered the re-dub, which I hate with an absolute passion. Mark Hamill should not voice an evil dictator. If you know me, you'll understand the rage... it's an impressive rant that never grows old.

Then... I was given an imported version as a present one year. Oh happy day :D. Now I can watch it whenever I like and not worry about ruining a tape again. Yay for the digital age. Still love it, and really like most of Hayao Miyazaki's other films.

Other films include:
Cowboy Bebop - follows the "quote along" rule from another poster
Dracula 2001 - Gerard Butler (need I say more?)
Sin City & 300 - Beautifully artistic. Yay for Stelios in 300 and Gail in Sin City
Shawshank Redemption - it's been said already
And there are probably many more.

Pet Cemetery
I went to see Pet Cemetery. I'm not a fan of Stephen King (I liked the The Long Walk though) but I was bored so figured I'd give it a spin one weekday afternoon. There was hardly anyone else there, but funnily enough there was one lady who had smuggled in her little lap-dog in her handbag. Heh. Didn't bother me, and the irony of bringing a dog to Pet Cemetery made me snigger. Interestingly, this little pooch seemed transfixed by the movie and stared at the screen intently the whole way though, even cowering at the scary bits, and looking inquisitive during the suspenseful stuff. Too weird. Anyway, when the movie was over I joked to the lady 'Your dog seemed to have enjoyed that'. 'Yes,' she replied 'Most odd considering he hated the book'.

I had a browse

through my collection of 300 or so DVD's last night to see if I could stir up any forgotten memories and came across (not like that!) another few films that made an impression on me at some point.

Once were Warriors - All about Maori warriors and how they deal with the societal problems of being treated as outcasts.

I.D. - Four policemen go undercover and infiltrate a gang of football hooligans one of which gets a little too involved!

Ferris Bueller's Day Off - Pure Class, if only for Mia Sara's pool scene,
Hmmm.. Luuurrrvvvly!

Not quite the Warriors
I vote for 'The Wanderers' being one of the best gang films ever. It's probably a touch more believable than the Warriors. What with gangs forming largely based on ethnic backgrounds rather than whether they all like dressing up in baseball kit and makeup. Lots of quality songs from the 60s and farcical fight scenes. Bring it on!

The fight scene on the football field is a particularly memorable scene. Although I have never figured out why the Ducky Boys (Large Irish Gang) are seemingly all mute. Any ideas?

not really on topic, but vaguely cinema related
My first ever boyfriend was taking me out on my first EVER real date.

I had taken the train the whole way to Sydney and found the park where we were to meet up (romantic backsetting of drunks, drugs and bums).

I had even found said boyfriend, this being the days before mobile phones were widespread or indeed, handy at all.

Immensely pleased with myself and very excited I enquired what we were doing on this date?

"Why" he replied I'm taking you to the movies."

Fantastic! That sounds exactly like the kind of thing you are supposed to do on a real date!

"What are we going to see?" I ask, trembling with romance and excitement.

"Operation Dumbo Drop."

There ended the excitement....and the relationship followed quickly. There never was any romance to be had in any case.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is my one and only real date EVER.

And my worst ever movie experience.

Apologies for lack of editing and any mistakes associated.

Having joined Lovefilm earier this year
on an internet trial (in an attempt to get a free wii which I have since got no further with through apathy) I kept up my minimum 2 discas a month membership. I've seen a few decent films which I've never had the gumption to buy.

Although I know this doesn't fit with the question, I have to say it.

Shoot em up is the worst load of shite I have ever accidentally watched. I pray that some sort of huge catastrophe occurs before I ever have to watch it again. Jumping about shooting people whilst bringing Monica Belucci off..... I mean really. Just pish.

I tell a lie, it's not worse than Love Actually. Or Bridget Jones (the sudden strobe effect during the big fight outside the restaraunt just riles me, where is it supposed to be coming from? Heat Magazine shite.)

Whoo-ah
How on earth could I forget?

Scent Of A Woman - how's this for a line:

Lt. Col. Frank Slade: Out of order, I show you out of order. You don't know what out of order is, Mr. Trask. I'd show you, but I'm too old, I'm too tired, I'm too fuckin' blind. If I were the man I was five years ago, I'd take a FLAMETHROWER to this place! Out of order? Who the hell do you think you're talkin' to? I've been around, you know? There was a time I could see. And I have seen. Boys like these, younger than these, their arms torn out, their legs ripped off. But there isn't nothin' like the sight of an amputated spirit. There is no prosthetic for that. You think you're merely sending this splendid foot soldier back home to Oregon with his tail between his legs, but I say you are... executin' his soul! And why? Because he's not a Bairdman. Bairdmen. You hurt this boy, you're gonna be Baird bums, the lot of ya. And Harry, Jimmy, Trent, wherever you are out there, FUCK YOU TOO!

A remake of the Italian Profuma di Donna from 1974 but still good.

Ordet
Carl Theodor Dreyer's 1955 film Ordet (aka, The Word). What a powerful, humbling masterpiece: makes you want to surrender the vanities of unbelief, and become a strict Lutheran, immediately! The slow measured pace, the intensity of emotion, the surprise ending - wow! Johannes, the apparent madman, sweeps all before him with his childlike faith.

My favorite film is...
Back to the future, couldn't tell you what it is I love about it so much, there's something about it.

As far as the BEST film I've ever seen I'm going to have to go with Ghost Dog.

Couple I forgot from my previous post
Raging Bull - Best De Niro film around, IMO. His descent into domestic abuse and directionless anger is like watching a car crash in slow motion.

Evil Dead 3 - Bruce Campbell is my hero after watching this film, slapstick genius. The ending in the S-Mart is possibly the best finish to any film I've ever seen!

EDIT: The Dark Knight - Watched a *ahem* legally grey copy of it the other day, fucking great film IMO.

Clerks...
and more recently Clerks 2 are a couple of my favorite films.
As well as:
Donnie Darko
Rain Man
Forest Gump (which you have to admit has a damn good Vietnam bit despite not actually being a war film)
Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz
Pulp Fiction (obviously)
Shoot 'Em Up (highly reccomended)
Office Space
Jackass The Movie and Jackass 2 (immature i know)
Oldboy
Battle Royale (sick humour and excessive violence FTW!)
The Thing
Judge Dredd
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (Nicholson at his best.)
Dogma
The Usual Suspects
The Butterfly Effect (even though i hate to admit it)
The Warriors
Demolition Man
Blade (only remembered because Snipes was in Demolition Man)
The Business (despite having Danny Dyer in a starring role, this film was highly enjoyable)

Please comment, maybe we'll even start a discussion about my taste in films, or the lack of it. ^^

A Bittersweet Life
I love Korean films. If they're not weepy meoldramas, they're half baked SF. If they're not SF, they're revenge dramas. And they're always totally hardcore, with at least one graphic moment of horror. There are many great Korean films. Shiri is an excellent action movie. Old Boy is incredibly extreme revenge to the max sort of film. Natural City is the Korean Blade Runner. But the best Korean film I've seen is A Bittersweet Life.

A Bittersweet Life tells the story of a hotel enforcer who falls in love with the bosses girl. It's not too much of a spoiler to say that eventually fucks him pretty badly.

You won't see a more beautifully crafted film (every detail, including the credits, is class). And it has some action set pieces that will literally have your jaw on the floor. It's the best film I've seen, with the possible exception of Double Indemnity. But Double Indemnity, while having Barbara Stanwyck, doesn't have a massive ultraviolent gun battle at the end, so this shades it.

If you've got one of those DVD to your house rental things going, get this one if you can. It's the tops!

Mad Max 2: a sequel that's better than the original.
Much better and more fully realized vision than Mad Max 1.

I saw the badly dubbed version (into US english for dozy Yanks)of the 1st film, so that was an initially off-putting but other than the brilliant opening and closing scenes it was just a cheesy retread of Dirty Harry. It didn't make much sense either.

Why would defense lawyers have so much power in a post apocalyptic society, getting villains off on technicalities? Why would they even exist? Martial-law time scumbags! You eyed up my oil supply in a suspicious manner...DIE! Case closed.

Yet people insist that the 1st one was better. Despite the distinct lack of mutants in bondage gear.

Gremlins
Brighton. Winter 1984 (after the Grand Hotel bombing). Took some acid and went to see a matinee performance of Gremlins.

The cinema was complete chaos - children laughing, shouting, crying, running up and down the ailes. I was tripping off my brain in the front row with my friend and enjoying every minute of it.

Good times...

For months
I bitched about how titanic was a worthless piece over-hyped hollywood turd.

and then I watched it. I enjoyed it.

Still nowhere near as good as the Back to the Future trilogy or Ghostbusters but an enjoyable experience nevertheless.

How about some suggestions for film crossovers like where Marty and The Doc fly over the titanic and rescue Jack just before he plunges into the icy depths?

Over to you...

The best films for scaring me....
Creeping murderers? Eep. Manic robbers?! Crikey. Crazy rapists?!?!? Shit me.

Yes, all very well and scary. I'm not good when it comes to suspense. I tend to scream even if nothing happens. What really gets me though is zombies.

~shudders~

How do they move so slowly and yet catch up to everyone? How can they pounce on you to munch your face off when even moving makes parts of their rotting body fall off in a slimey plop?? How can they find you no matter how well you hide???

Even briefly, seeing a hunched sloppy green figure moaning in what I presume to be delight at a potential feast....

Uagagagagh.

Gordon's alive!
May not be the best film ever but one of the best viewing experience was Flash Gordon at the Astra's kids crush on a Saturday afternoon. 500 kids and a few adults all singing along with 'dum dum dum dum Flash arrrhh saviour of the universe', all while throwing aniseed balls at th lower seats and a nice lady bringing ice cream on a tray in the interval. What more can a child from a small town ask for?

More of same - went to see Grease with the Brownies at the hall in our home town that occasionally showed films and the film caught fire!
