This is a question Why I Love/Hate Britain

This week's been all about the Daily Mail and why people love or hate their country. Tell us one thing you hate about Britain, and one thing about why you love it.

This shouldn't be an excuse for RACISTLOLS, or long lists of things you dislike. Be intelligent, be funny, and be interesting

Not if this is against the rules or not...
but on my travels through the interweb I stumbled across this. It's a booklet given to the American soldiers in WW2 when they arrived in the UK to explain what the people and day-to-day life and culture is like, an interesting read.

Panty-waists!
"The English language didn't spread across the oceans and over the mountains and jungles and swamps of the world because these people were panty-waists."

I seem to have missed the section
where it says about how British housewives can be bribed into congress for the price of a few stockings.

Reminds me of an GI info film I saw on youtube
It was mostly about teaching the white GI's not to flip out if they saw an old white woman talking to a black man. Seriously. Racial segregation was still in force so they had to educate them to not expect the rest of the world to be massively racist.

During the war, there was a group of white GIs in the UK who used to go to my gran's local pub. One night they went in and were pissed off to find a group of black soldiers in "their" corner of the pub. On top of that, the white soldiers were shocked to see that the staff were washing and re-using glasses after black people had drunk from them, same as they would with white customers. They ordered the blacks out of the pub and demanded the (white) landlord smash up all the glasses that they had used, and when he refused, they kicked him out of his own pub!

Starting/continuing an american military tradition.
Wherever they are, they act like they own the place and then wonder why everybody hates them.

Probably what we were like in the 19th century.

Thanks for that
Really interesting and even-handed.

I thought the bit about women officers in the army particularly fascinating.

Reading that has filled me with an unfamiliar sense of civic pride,
tinged with despair about the ridiculous system of currency that we maintained for so long.

If only I could find one of those crack trains...
