This is a question My Collection

Do you have display cabinets full of stuff? With it all neatly labelled, cross-referenced and entered into a database. Have you been to a convention? Do other collectors look up to you in awe?

I thought I was above this one. I'm not that autistically geeky that I have a Collection with a capital C. But no, I remembered I'm hoarding away every version of "Inside Macintosh" ever published.

What do you collect? And why? I mean, what makes you do it?

I can't think of anything that I actually collect
I mean I own every Discworld book published to date (some of which are signed) but that's just so I can read them, I thought a collection in this sense is just something for the sake of it. Ah well. In place of an interesting story, here are a selection of ridiculous things which people will probably claim to collect over the next week.

Venereal Diseases
Dead Hookers
Chuck Norris Movies
Celebrity Pubes
Lint
Boogers
Odd Socks
Tramps
b3ta newsletters
the pickles from MacDonalds burgers
Lollipop Sticks
Broken Copies of Paris Hilton's Album
Porn.

Edit: Bugger, should have read the rest of this page.

Some years ago
I worked for Forbidden Planet in London and I was asked to help run a small stall one night. At the Trocadero centre they had a Star Trek themed ride on the "Imaginator" and had invited some serious Trekkies along. We were there to sell them the uniforms and overpriced plastic junk they like so much.

We set up inside and were waiting for them to arrive. I think there were a few press outside, or maybe they just enjoyed doing it, but instead of the jingle of geek-money we were treated to a terrifying, high-pitched rendition of the "ooooh-oooooooohs" from the original tv theme tune. It was performed by a mixture of Star Fleet officers, Klingons and lumpy females. They are odd people.

everything the band Lowgold have ever done. That's a worthless collection right there.

They're ace! Listen to them.

I don't like throwing things away
So I have tons of crap from dice to empty SMWS whisky bottles to for some unknown reason a Sabbat live video not watched since about 1989, and also

Warhammer - Done, loads of them all boxed up in the loft

Magic the Gathering - Done, all under my bed.

Books sir, thaasands of em

Bizarre mag - 9 onwards and starting to get in the way

Cambridge United Programmes - im hoping we go bust, they might then be worth something one day.

Crap cars that break and cost me lots. Only one at a time though.

edit - Just remembered, every Cambridge Camra beer festival glass since 1996 anyone who breaks one has to eat the glass, thats how much i cherish them, buy three every year to ensure the collection lives on.

length? this long (to scale)

I collect crap facts and crap jokes
hence my recently purchased copy of the b3ta book of sick jokes.

I like facts such as America consumes 18 Acres of pizza every day. And today, yes today, more phone calls were made than in the whole of 1983.

I used to have a collection of pretty much every issue of "Your Sinclair"
plus a cupboard with about 500 tapes and a Speccy +2a with attachment - the attachment thus being a "Midland Bank" compass for a "Play button". I wore it out.

The magazines are painfully no more though, but the speccy and tapes still exist :)

Glass Bottles
I have a growing collection of glass perfume bottles that I started because I didn't collect anything and because I felt they were suitably girly.

I love when people have collections though as it makes present buying easier!

I have a copy of every issue of Heavy Metal Magazine ever printed!
(except for the special issues)

Having a subscription for the last 20 years helps, and eBay helped me with the rest.

I might actually get time to read them sometime.

I collected cow bones as a kid.
We lived on the edge of town, and there was a creek within walking distance. My dad and I would walk down there and we'd find all kinds of cow bones an old farmer had dumped from dead/butchered cows.

My dream was to collect a whole skeleton and wire it together. Maybe I'd get my picture in the paper and be famous!

No luck. We found plenty of teeth, but never a full skull, and only chips of ribs. The leg bones survived pretty well, but only the hind ones.

I have a fine collection of Porn mag’s from around the world. My Prize one is a Playboy from my date of birth which Mrs Otter arranged to be framed for one of my birthdays, handy as it now wipes clean.

I also have a collection of trainers that’s starting to get out of control, 3 pairs have been added to it this week.

Traffic cones!
Yes, I know, every drunken pillock runs around with one of them on their head at least once.

But this is different; I have - as of last night - 19 traffic cones of various shapes (usually coney, though) and sizes, which have been collected from across the east midlands or a period of a few months.

I'm going to make a wall, or an army, I'm not sure.

I'll take a photo tomorrow. :D

Length? It's the height that matters!

Edit: I've just had the sugegstion that I should use them as a giant chess set, I feel it's an idea with potential. However, it will require me to get many matching cones, meaning I'll probably have to return to the scene of the crime. It could be worth it though. Having said that, I don't fancy putting lino down in the garden.

Computers
Me and my dad have quite a collection of old computers in the garage. Spectrum, BBC Micro, QL, ZX81, Amiga, Atari ST, Atari 800XL, Mac Classic, C64, Amstrad CPC464, PCs and many more. Mum wants rid of them because they take up too much room.

I've even been designing and building a computer myself, using a processor (the 8085) that is older than I am.

Vintage Starwars Figures
I collect them because I couldnt afford many when I was a child in the early 80's.

The jewel of my collection is my Luke Skywalker in stormtrooper disguise with original blaster & helmet. There is no discolouration and it only cost me £35.

And yes, they are individually sealed in special bags & stored away from sunlight (a bit like myself).

Video cameras
I have around 40 video cameras and camcorders, dating from the early 70s to the present day. I'm particularly proud of my Panasonic F10 camera, and the Sony Betamovie (a betamax camcorder), as well as the JVC shoulder mounted unit, as seen in Back to the Future...

Yes, I'm a geek.

At the moment,
Warhammer, about 500 models in total. I don't really know why... I only got into it because I was given a rocket for my 11th birthday, and my mum made me take it back. I had 30 whole pounds to spend, turned around and BAM. Nine years later I'm still at it. I'm pretty good at it now though, and I've made about 500 pounds in the last year selling painted models.

And comics of every kind...I even have some of the ones featured on Superdickery. And Magic the Gathering.

And DVDs and books. Some of which are signed first editions from Terry Pratchett and Brett Easton Ellis, as well as a whole bunch of film concept art from Star Wars and The Matrix and a few other films. I love films and books, and I just enjoy seeing the evolution of an idea before it gets to the finished product.

And Bonsai trees, and those little guitars you can get. Dont know why, people just keep giving them to me.

Big guitars as well...I'm up to six, so far. Well, I play, and I now have two electric, a bass, and three acoustic.

I have every Guiness Book of Records since I was born. God knows why.

And a ludicrous amount of lord of the rings memorabilia. I have signed posters, swords, models, a standee I keep all my dvds in, and an old prog-album from the seventies by someone called Bo, with a signed Tolkien picture in it. I even have an English-Elvish dictionary for christs sake.

If you can count these too, I have a little collection of characters I made in clay, and theres about a hundred of them...as well as about 20 sculpts I've made of various comic book and film characters (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Discworld, Spidey/Iron Man/Hellboy/Superman)

And I'm working on 8" sculpts of Space Marines for a stopmotion film I'm working on. So I'll have about 5 of those.

And at the moment...thats about it.

I am nerd, hear me roar.

Sorry it's not funny or anything...Its just me throwing my geekdom about

Erm...
Programmes, early 90s Touring Car autographs and ticket stubs, car magazines by the hundreds. I should throw some of it away, but i just can't bring myself to.

Also, the majority of programmes and tickets etc. of things i've been directly involved in, usually music-related, and lots of certificates and things i achieved when little. It's for the future kids and grandkids really.

Beer mats
I have about 40 of them by now, all of them different. York has the most pubs per square mile of anywhere in England, so I've still got a load more to collect!

Also bits of MG Midgets... slowly collecting... in my room at university. I just hope that the cleaners don't notice the Weber carburettor sitting on my desk or the halfshafts under my bed... eventually they will go on my car
