This is a question DIY Techno-hacks

Old hard drive platters make wonderfully good drinks coasters - they look dead smart and expensive and you've stopped people reading your old data into the bargain.

Have you taped all your remotes together, peep-show-style? Have you wired your doorbell to the toilet? What enterprising DIY have you done with technology?

Extra points for using sellotape rather than solder.

Probably should get around to this
in my new houseshare, if you turn on the lights, the telly changes channels

WHAT.

wow
and I thought my new house had some interesting quirks! Although the main one isn't electronic - to get in the bathroom you go through the kitchen, into the garage and then climb in through the window, and the reverse to get out again, unless you can successfully use the knife to open the lock.

.
The same thing happened to us in our uni house last year, switch the light on and the Virgin Media box would skip down 3 or 4 channels.

If you happened to be watching Sky Sports at the time it would normally land on one of the adult channels, well that was the housemate's usual excuse anyway!

It's the iron in my house,
Every time the thermo switch clicks, the telly goes on. Never off, only on!

Infra Red
I would hazard a guess that there is some flicker to the infra red spectrum of the lights which mimics the signal the remote sends to the television.

possibly.
Alternatively, there may be a bad connection somewhere in your wiring. Switching on a light might be causing a small voltage dip which confuses the telly. Probably wise to get that checked out, or at least get proper advice.

Disclaimer: I am not an electrician.
