# Oooo look at my sonic screwdriver missus!

# Even at its most socially conservative
(which I'd identify as the Letts and Dick era), it was overtly promoting values that were progressive for its time, or, as a brain-dead culture warrior might say, it has always had a woke agenda.

It was never a show that promoted conservative values. At its worst it has promoted moral relativism included musical numbers.

I do miss the karate chops of the Pertwee era, though.

# I just sat through the first two episodes.
Fucking hell, they were bad. The Christmas one wasn't good but I thought Gatwa and Gibson showed promise. Shame they were reduced to shrieking emptiness in the full series, dunno if it's Davies or Disney to blame but I won't watch further to find out.

Still, it winds up xenophobic cunts like delboyonline, so they must be doing something right.

# Today's was a lot better, I thought.
Not that I minded the first two. They at least romped along.

# Tom Baker was my era
I just can't rustle up any interest in watching any of the new series though. To be honest I haven't bothered with it for years, which is a shame because it used to be essential family viewing. It has lost all the charm of the original and it's now just another scifi show where they shout and chase down corridors. I half expect Mike Reid to pop up and shout "Runaround!" when I see clips on the internet.

# I haven't, you didn't read what I said
Try reading my message and you'll see I said I have seen clips on the internet. I haven't watch BBC channels for years, there is nothing of interest there for me.

I really liked Matt Smith and Moffat's style of storytelling. Capaldi was great too, without the guitar. John Hurt doesn't count, but he was fine for what the role was I guess. Whittaker was good, but her scripts were mostly dogshit and the budget seemed to vanish at that time too.

Tennant had some great scripts to work with, but I hated his fake persona. The truly crap accent that slips into Scottish half the time, the randomly occurring shpeech impediment that he ushed while chewing the shets, the false eccentricity...

...It's too early to judge Gatwa. So far he's had absolute bollocks to work with, some of the worst DW scripts ever, and yes I've seen The Gunfighters. Once.

# A bit camp and the accent is a little odd but we could do worse.
Gurning drag queens and talking babies aside my biggest complaint is the writers making some big over-arching plot about a companion that I couldn’t give two shits about. But they’ve been doing that for years now haven’t they.
(, Mon 20 May 2024, 3:37, archived)
# I thought the gurning drag queen was the best thing in that episode.
What really annoyed me was that music itself was presented as notation. The Time Lords didn't throw Roman numerals at each other, because time is not notation, and notation is arbitrary. Why then is this music lord chucking staffs and clefs at people?

Having power over music is an interesting concept and could make for an interesting scifi story, so of course they didn't try.

Gatwa's accents seem real, so I have no problem with them. So far he seems real, which is what the role demands imo.

# I’ll get used to it, it’s just the Rs that sound odd.
But over the top, scenery chewing drag? No fucking thanks.

# I don't think the role called for an understated performance
and while the human actor is a drag artist I'm not sure if the god-like alien character was.
