This is a question Rubbish Towns

I once went to Basildon. It was closed, I got chased by a bunch of knuckle-dragged yobs until I was lost in a maze of concrete alleyways and got food poisoning off pie. Tell us about the awful places you've visited or have your home.

Thanks to SpankyHanky for the suggestion

Burnley
Unless I've missed it, Burnley hasn't yet been mentioned in this QOTW, which is an absolute scandal - there can be few places in the entire world, not just this country, as unequivocally shit as Burnley.

It's in the arse end of nowhere, which is probably the best place for it to be fair, and all of the buildings are constructed from the same drab and dreary stone, that makes the place seem singularly miserable and grey, even on a sunny day.

I've never lived there, thankfully, but dwell in a neighbouring town which, despite having the usual gripes associated with pretty much any town or city in this formerly grand land of ours, shines like a brilliant beacon of success alongside the hemorrhoid on the arse of the nation that is Burnley.

Do not go there!

Agreed...
...I lived there for about 6 months once. It sucked. Quite a bit.

You forgot to mention the fact that it's a BNP constituency, which says a lot. Not even my own pet-hated St Helens can make that claim.

Burnley
I went there a few months ago - utter dump!

Half of the shops are boarded up and the landscape is mainly long closed mills - it's grim Oop North!

Oh, and don't try to find a decent cafe that is open for breakfast on a Sunday - we couldn't find one despite walking around the desolate, dreary place for hours!

"a neighbouring town"?
Nelson? Brierfield? Padiham?

They're all equally horrible.

re: Burnley
Preston actually, those other three are all far too close to Burnley for my liking! It's got the usual issues, but it aint nowhere near as shite as Burnley!

Burnley
I once hitched a lift with a viola player who'd jsut been to Burnley - he said they'd clamoured to have a wind farm installed just so they'd have something to look at.

I work in Burnley and already beat you to it on here.
And you're all correct.

..and
Burnley is attached via an umbilical chord of a road which leads to equally shit little villages such as Cornholme, Bacup and Todmorden, all of which are populated by locals with the similar mentality as seen in the popular television series 'The League of Gentlemen'

If you're not local, inbred, a heroin addict or a hippie, you're not welcome..
