# Interesting fact*:
I tested the leather used for the pugil sticks on old Gladiators.

*not interesting but really a fact.

# Did they mind you testing it on them?
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:30, archived)
# They minded less
once the padding and leather were on them.
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:31, archived)
# What did you do to it?
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:31, archived)
# Checked it's tear and tensile strengths
the thickness, the colour, the veslic and taber rubfastnesses. That kind of thing.
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:32, archived)
# Were they not able to check the colour themselves?
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:33, archived)
# Not to the same standard that I could, no.
None of this over simplified Pantone stuff. This was full on CIELAB colour space assessment.
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:34, archived)
# I had no idea it had to be so specific

# The company I worked in the QC lab for
mostly made leather for Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Prince Charles's personal carriage, the House of Lords. That sort of thing. If someone is spending 100,000 on a car, they want to know that they can replace a seat panel if they tear it. We had to get the colour to match every other batch that had ever been made and so that it looked the same under daylight, sodium street lamps, flourescent tubes in their garage etc.

# it's always scary when this kind of conversation starts and i understand it
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:39, archived)
# Nah. Didn't have to do fogging or cold-cracking either.
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:39, archived)
# pffft

but I'm turned on.

# We did also make leather for
um...slightly odder customers. There was one customer who wanted an entire room upholstered in unfinished leather. I guess some people find that sort of thing quite sexy but without the varnish on it, it will stain really easily with any body fluids.
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:41, archived)
# Bet it smells nice though.
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:44, archived)
# Not too bad.
Most of the 'smell' of leather is due to the chemicals put on to tan it and preserbe it.
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:45, archived)
# Oh don't ruin the magic.
The tannery place in Nottingham smells horrid.
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:48, archived)
# True
Actually the smell is more from the chemicals used after tanning to make it soft and pliable and colour it.
(, Wed 23 Apr 2008, 19:52, archived)
# Well whatever it is that makes it smell nice
I love it very much. My saddle stinks of saddlesoap and horse now.
