I like how it looks and there's a practical reason.
They are great upland bird dogs and do pretty well in desert mountains as well.

The older bitch spends a lot of time in the reeds and brambles looking for birds.
I've known hunters with dogs with tails that spend a lot of time picking garbage out of them and some that have had them accidentally pulled off. I like my dogs too much to risk a damaged tail.

That does explain a fair bit ... 'spending a lot of time picking garbage out of them' (that's too bad) ... 'accidentally pulled off' (why would they pull the tail anyway unless said hunter didn't give a toss about the animal ?)
If evolution doesn't want a dog to have a tail ... so fucking be it.
Edit: sorry about the generalisation about hunters ... the ones I've met in the UK are cunts ... I'm sure you're great and care about animal welfare really.

Dogs get their tails pulled off in many ways. The forays into the bushes were illustrative of tight spots that can present danger
I don't hunt as much as I'd like. Pheasant hunting on the plains with a good dog is a lot of fun.
Edit: the biggest land conservation groups in the US involve hunters. They try to keep land from being developed and many put land holdings in their wills with covenants that it can't be developed. And unlike many of their urban conservationist brethren, they actually get out into nature.

ITS TAZZY
I love this dog he is such a DUDE ..... He should be studded daily three times and four on Sundays, given fresh steak to eat and highland spring water to drink.
I am gonna steal him one day and take him to a doggy brothel in Amsterdam for a week and dress him in a tux. I WANT TAZZY!!!!!!!!!!
