# 90 should have been ours
98 chould have been ours
02 could have been ours

At least this time there was no excuse. We were just shit

# pff - I might give you 90
but England have no real history at major championships - Euro semis twice in 50 years, WC semis twice in 80 years (one was 66) and that's it

# all true
we are a quarter final nation at best
It's time we realised that

# or the sudden realisation that the previous shouldawouldacouldas
were tinged with a few delusions of grandeur...

# I don't even think its delusions of grandeur
I just think they don't give a flying one

# 90 was the only one where they looked like having a chance
i've said it a few times during this world cup, that I think the premiership is a bit isolated and the english team would benefit if more english players went abroad. There are of course teams like Germany and Italy where all the players stay in the home country (generally) but they are educated from youth to play technically and tactically, while as a kid in england, there's less emphasis on those things, where hard work is the measure of a decent player. I think english players would benefit from playing in leagues where the football is more technical, rather than in a league like the premiership where 16 of the teams are just trying to stop conceding goals however they can. I realise this argument has some holes.

# not sure about 98.
we couldnt even get to the top of our group.
(, Fri 9 Jul 2010, 9:45, archived)
# yeah
thats suppossed to say 'could'.

It was a cracking team, but Hoddle balls it up in the group stage, and as usual we lose to the first decent team we play

# this year was so much worse than 98
despite beating Slovenia, I didn't feel like england ever looked like they were likely to win any games.
