Well he has admitted to basing a lot of the original Star Wars movie on these old Flash Gordon series
which were episodic and had cliffhangers (sometimes literally) and had a very old fashioned 'boy saves girl' style, so...

He wanted to make a Flash Gordon movie, but Dino De Laurentis held the rights.
End result = Star Wars.
He paid homage in numerous ways, from the scrolling text & episode names, to his use of the same circular/slash fades & cuts that were employed throughout the original series.
