It's recommended by the powers that be to try and keep images under 100k,for still images and 400k for animated gifs.
It's also an idea to keep the dimensions around 400pixels wide. This isn't part of the rules, your pic can be as big as you want (within reason), but if you're aiming for any front page pics, then 400wide is the limit for fp's.
