My personal favourite along these lines - a particularly ill-judged promotional campaign at Burger King...
which resulted in all the counter staff wearing T-shirts with the slogan "too cool for school" on the back.
I think a particularly sharp lesson on the benefits of educational attainment.

or possibly the extreme ease of swapping the word 'cool'
for 'stupid'.
I was at a Wendy's some time ago and when told the bill came to $12, I handed over a 20 and two ones.
The nobel laureate behind the counter then apologised for not having any tens to give me in the change, instead (very carefully) counted out four 5's, and proceeded to put the two singles on top, asking, 'Is that ok for you sir?'
I could do nothing but stare.
