I have mates from Penistone
I remember one of them searching the name during the earlyish days of the internet and being amused to find an American website on funny place names that mentioned "...the people of Penistone seem utterly unaware of the hilarity of their proximity to a village called Wombwell".
Also, another mate claims - possibly untruthfully - that the funniest day of his childhood was when the T fell off the sign at Penistone Cinema.

According to legend
When Brian Laws - former Scunthorpe manager - left to manage Wednesday someone painted over one of the "Welcome to Scunthorpe' signs so it read 'Welcome to S thorpe' and wrote underneath "the cunt's gone to Sheffield".
