they didn't kill Kevin Spacey's characters off though, just swapped his face.Killing Leia would have meant rewriting three quarters of the film, getting all the other actors back in (if they weren't off shooting other films already) reshooting, restarting the fx work and ditching Carrie Fishers last work.
I think they made the right choice, let JJ Abrams work out how to deal with it. It's only a kids film, just say she went back to wherever Mary Poppins comes from.
