But a 'generic image type thing', if you just stick an <img> tag in without any supporting information that's what you get, wonder what you get under other browsers?

No, that's just for broken images.
Don't think it has a specific duff url icon.
Edit: no, you're quite right, I'm talking poo: the intact piece of paper is 'an image goes here', the duff url/broken image is the ripped paper.
