but the thing that causes the confusion is that Chinese can be both a nationality AND an ethnicity. Most of the people I know here would call themselves ethnic Chinese of Taiwanese nationality.

My students are really confused about it, though most of them (elementary school age) very definitely consider themselves Taiwanese, which probably tells you something about the future of the country. So you here long term then?
