I was having occasional troubles with my iRiver, but it was fine after defraging.

I've tried reformatting it, but it never completes the refomat. I think it actually is well and truly fucked

Try plugging it in through Windows and using some of the error checking tools on it then doing a defrag. It's probably screwed, but this is worth a crack I reckon.
