Have you defragmented it at any point?
I was having occasional troubles with my iRiver, but it was fine after defraging.

I haven't tried a defrag
but i've wiped everything off the drive, so there shouldn't be anything to refrag????
I've tried reformatting it, but it never completes the refomat. I think it actually is well and truly fucked

Could be.
Try plugging it in through Windows and using some of the error checking tools on it then doing a defrag. It's probably screwed, but this is worth a crack I reckon.
