I was thinking pretty much the same thing:the moustache makes him look vulnerable. Without it he looks like a psycho.

I also convinced myselfthat without the moustache he looked exactly like Buster Keaton. This conviction lasted right up until the moment that I did an image search for Buster Keaton.
