Assuming you're using photoshop there's 4 things you can do when saving a jpeg for the web to reduce it's size. Other people may have other suggestions.
1) Reduce the size of the image. E.g. from 600 pixels wide to 450.
2) Add blur (which is also nice as it hides seams.
3) Lower the jpeg quality. Your milage may vary incredibly with this. Some images seem happy with quality 0, others look crap with less than 60.
4) Use a PNG or a GIF - switch those formats in the save for web place in Photoshop. Remember to reduce the amount of colours down to a minimum, and see if that's smaller.
That's all I do, and it's enough to get my images way under the 50K.
