that was the whole problem i had with primary school history trying to tell me that hadrian's (and other walls) were built to keep the scots back, when they were in fact built to keep the picts enclosed.

oh, i got lectured by a welsh nationalist on the subject and he actually was pretty convincing.i'm pretty sure the picts were from elsewhere too though. thinking about it though, if you go far enough back, surely at some point britain was attached to the continent and so it proabaly all stems back a very loing way to the point where it's all redundant anyway. so yes. you're original point still stands.
